When New Zealand locks down to fight Covid-19, can Grayson Miller help a teenage stranger without breaking the rules of Alert Level Four?
Sixteen-year-old Grayson (Gray) Miller is struggling to cope with the burden of schoolwork, on top of needing to babysit his younger sister and brother. Gray’s father died the previous year and since then Gray has had to step up his responsibilities whilst his mother works in the local supermarket, but all he wants to do is bike up to Rainner’s Gorge where he protects the native birds with his small trapline. Meanwhile, the WHO has declared that Covid-19 is a global pandemic and cases have begun to appear in New Zealand. Gray has no idea the types of measures the nation will be called upon to keep … or how difficult it might be to obey the law. This young adult novel is set during the initial nationwide lockdown of 2020, and deals with the difficulty of navigating within black and white lines when the world is full of grey.
