Louise Shaw, author, homeschool Mum and voracious reader

Author Biography

Louise Shaw lives on a lifestyle block in Geraldine, South Canterbury, with her husband and four of her six children. As a homeschooling family with a strong interest in creative arts (music, dance, photography and art) and a rural home with the pets to match, its a busy life but one that provides ready inspiration for Louise's writing.  She began to write seriously in 2019, bringing her love of New Zealand's wild beauty into her stories, together with memories of her childhood in rural Nelson and the everyday adventures that naturally occur in the life of a large family. 'Clash of the Cousins', winner of the 2020 Storylines Award for an unpublished author, was inspired by Louise's daughter, Faith, who was equal parts animal-loving tomboy and elegant ballerina. 'Good Old Kiwi Spirit' is based upon her memories of school cross country runs in the 1970's, and 'The Enchanted Fountain' series by the mermaid fountain found at Caroline Bay, Timaru. It is now a seven-part series, which should keep the kids busy who demanded to know 'what happened next!'

Louise has three times been shortlisted for the Storylines Tom Fitzgibbon award for junior novel and in 2021 was shortlisted for the Tessa Duder Award for teenage fiction with the NZ dystopian novel '#Quarantine'. Her personal favourite series, The Kingdom of Naramina is set in the far off medieval land where nine 'potential' brides are vying for the hand of reluctant Prince Nicolas. Book One, True Potential, will soon be followed by the other three books. Louise aims to inspire, nourish and entertain a new generation of children. She is dedicated to providing books full of fun, adventure and excitement which celebrate the importance of family and friendships. Louise wants parents to feel that their children's hearts and minds are in safe keeping, when they pick up a book by Louise Shaw.
